Lockhart, TX: The Barbecue Capital of Texas Just Minutes from Austin

Some towns are known for one thing, and Lockhart wears its title proudly: this is the official Barbecue Capital of Texas, a designation the state legislature made official in 1999. Located just at the intersection of US 183 and SH 142, about 30 miles southeast of Austin, Lockhart gives buyers small-town charm with a quick commute to one of Texas's biggest job markets.

The town's history goes back to the early 1830s. It's named after Byrd Lockhart, a surveyor who acquired land along Plum Creek that later became the townsite. After the Battle of Plum Creek in 1840 pushed Comanche influence westward, more settlers moved into the area, and in 1848, Caldwell County was established, with Lockhart named the county seat. The town later became an important stop on the Chisholm Trail in the late 1860s, and the arrival of the railroad helped it grow into a major center for cotton processing.

Today, Lockhart's historic downtown square is a big part of its charm. At the center stands the Caldwell County Courthouse, completed in 1894, built of Muldoon limestone with red Pecos sandstone trim and topped with a four-way clock tower. Nearby, the Dr. Eugene Clark Library holds the title of the oldest operating public library in Texas, and visitors can also step back in time at the Caldwell County Museum, housed in the town's old jail.

Of course, the real draw for many is the food. Lockhart is home to legendary spots like Terry Black's, Kreuz Market, and Smitty's Market, plus the Original Black's BBQ, which opened as a meat market back in 1932. Beyond the barbecue, the town's square is filled with boutiques, cafés, upscale restaurants, and hand-crafted spirits in beautifully restored historic buildings.

For buyers who want small-town character, real Texas history, and an easy commute to Austin, Lockhart is a standout choice.
