Lott, TX: A Railroad Town Built on Central Texas Farm Country

For buyers drawn to peaceful, small-town living surrounded by fertile farmland, Lott offers a genuine slice of Central Texas history. This Falls County community sits on U.S. Highway 77, nine miles northwest of Rosebud in west central Falls County, putting it about equal distance between Waco and Cameron for easy trips to either city.

Lott's story is a classic Texas railroad tale. In 1889, the Texas Townsite Company purchased land along a straight line between Cameron and Waco, making it a natural choice for a new town along the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad. The town was founded in 1890 and named in honor of Uriah Lott, president of the railroad. A post office followed that same year, and the community quickly grew—by 1892, Lott already had three churches, including Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian congregations, along with businesses processing cotton and grain. The town's population soon reached an estimated 1,200 residents by the late 1890s.

Agriculture has long been central to life in Lott. Cotton and corn were staple crops for area farmers for many years, with government programs later encouraging a shift toward stock raising and truck farming as well. That farming heritage still shapes the character of the community today.

Modern-day Lott remains a tight-knit, affordable community, with a homeownership rate of 79 percent and local churches like Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the United Methodist Church of Lott serving as community anchors. Students in the area attend Rosebud-Lott ISD or Westphalia ISD.

For buyers seeking an affordable, close-knit community with real small-town character and easy access to Waco, Lott is a wonderful place to put down roots.
